How I sang at Rosh-a-Shana

Last Rosh-a-Shana – New year according to Jewish calendar – has stuck in my memory for long. First of all, it was my first Jewish New year which I celebrated in the synagogue. And second – I took an active part in its celebration myself.

As a matter of fact, not long before the holidays, several days earlier, I was offered to sing in the synagogue with Mulaev. Yury Romanovich Mulaev is a very good singer, a soloist of the Opera House. Now he is studying to bacome a real cantor. He already had his program of Jewish New Year songs and payers. I had to sing a very beautiful canticle together with him. I came to the synagogue and met Yury Romanovich. He asked: "Are you ready" – you see, I had just been ill before. Of course, I was eager to sing but wasn't sure that I could. So we had a rehearsal before: we warmed up and repeated the words.

And then the feast came and it was our turn to perform. To tell the truth, I was very nervous. I began to sing, sang my part. Everything was OK. Then Yury Romanovich sang. The song was finished … and at the same moment everybody began to applaude. I was very glad. I am sure, Yury Romanovich was glad too. Then everybody congratulated us.

Then we sat at the table. There was much different food on the table but it is not the point. Most of all I was surprised by the holiday. I think that Jewish people has very many holidays: both sad and merry. Rosh-a-Shana is a merry holiday so everybody should have a merry and happy mood. Me too had a merry mood.

I was shocked a little: so many people, so many songs, entertainments, games, odds and ends.

During the festival service in the synagogue I thought: for regular New year we have a tree in Russia. And for the Jewish one – maybe, there should be some tree? Maybe some "rosh-a-shanchiks"? I didn't even imagine what tree this can be. But now I know what Rosh-a-Shana is. I am very grateful to everybody for this holiday. I got many of impressions from such a remarkable New year. I'd like to be present at the next New Year, but I have to wait for the whole year. Time will show…
